چکیده

The Gamma Ray Burst GRB920229 has four extreme and unprecedented properties; a rise in brightness with an e-folding time scale of 220 ± 30μs, a fall in brightness with an e-folding time scale of 400± 100μs, a large change in spectral shape over a time of 768μs, and a sharp spectral cutoff to high energies with ∆E/E = 18%. The rapid changes occur during a spike in the light curve which was seen 0.164 s after the start of the burst. The spectrum has a peak νFν at 200 keV with no significant flux above 239 keV, although the cutoff energy shifts to less than 100 keV during the decay of the spike. These numbers can be used to place severe limits on fireball models of bursts. The thickness of the energy production region must be smaller than ∼ 66km, ejected shells must have a dispersion of the Lorentz factor of less than roughly 1% along a particular radius, and the angular size of the radiation emission region is of order 1 arc-minute as viewed from the burst center. The physical mechanism that caused the sharp spectral cutoff has not been determined. Subject headings: gamma rays: bursts

Gamma Ray Bursts Have Millisecond Variability

We have performed searches for isolated flares and for steady flickering in Gamma Ray Burst light curves on the microsecond to millisecond time scales. Two bursts out of our sample of 20 revealed four isolated flares with time scales from 256μs to 2048μs. A wavelet analysis for our sample showed low level flickering for all bursts on time scales from 256μs to 33 ms, with the majority of bursts ...

A Gamma-ray Burst/pulsar for Cosmic-ray Positrons with a Dark Matter-like Spectrum

We propose that a nearby gamma-ray burst (GRB) or GRB-like (old, single and short-lived) pulsar/microquasar about 105−6 years ago may be responsible for the excesses of cosmic-ray positrons and electrons recently observed by the PAMELA, ATIC/PPB-BETS, Fermi and HESS experiments. We can reproduce the smooth Fermi/HESS spectra as well as the spiky ATIC/PPB-BETS spectra. The spectra have a sharp c...

The Average Temporal and Spectral Evolution of Gamma-ray Bursts

OF GAMMA-RAY BURSTS E. E. Fenimore D436 Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, NM 87545, USA email: [email protected] Received..........; accepted............ ABSTRACT We have averaged bright BATSE bursts to uncover the average overall temporal and spectral evolution of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). We align the temporal structure of each burst by setting its duration to a standard duration, w...

Detection Techniques of Microsecond Gamma-Ray Bursts using Ground-Based Telescopes

Gamma-ray observations above 200 MeV are conventionally made by satellite-based detectors. The EGRET detector on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO) has provided good sensitivity for the detection of bursts lasting for more than 200 ms. Theoretical predictions of high-energy γ-ray bursts produced by quantum-mechanical decay of primordial black holes (Hawking 1971) suggest the emission of b...

IMPLEMENTATION OF EXTENDED KALMAN FILTER TO REDUCE NON CYCLO-STATIONARY NOISE IN AERIAL GAMMA RAY SURVEY

Gamma-ray detection has an important role in the enhancement the nuclear safety and provides a proper environment for applications of nuclear radiation. To reduce the risk of exposure, aerial gamma survey is commonly used as an advantage of the distance between the detection system and the radiation sources. One of the most important issues in aerial gamma survey is the detection noise. Various...
